Avex President Masato Matsuura (45) was subjected to an intense argument with fans over twitter. The key cause of this was Tohoshinki, the Korean band which has currently paused all activities.

Last year, Jejung, Junsu & Yuchun filed for a provisional disposition against the exclusive contract with their management agency. This caused a difference between the trio and the remaining pair of Changmin and Yunho. In April this year, their Japanese management company Avex announced that they would be suspending all group activities. Moreover, on 28 June, Jejung and the others officially started their lawsuit for the unfair exclusive contract against the company, asking for a compensation for 10 billion won* (Approx 733 million yen) each.

Fans asked Matsuura about this issue on twitter, and he replied, “ Honestly, there is nothing we can do about it.” and fans said,“ Somehow or another, it became a situation where we couldn’t do anything. ” via twitter. “I cannot deny that” was his answer, and also “ Having them as 5 is what I want, (but) not wanting this is their decision.” With this, Matsuura, who has always been working hard  for Tohoshinki to continue their activities, hinted at an irreparable rift between the members.

In reply to this remark, a portion of the Tohoshinki fans said “Even if this is the truth, do you know how many people you hurt with just one sentence? Aren’t you an adult?”, “Please stop this already, this isn’t doing us any good!” , “ Please stop talking as if you know everything” and similar criticism was the resounding response.

Typically, companies and artists ignore such negative comments from fans on channels such as twitter, but Matsuura said, “Would you prefer that I lie?”, “I’ve said on many occasions that I’m still a child,” “What do you mean, that I should stop using twitter,” and “If this is the case, don’t ask me any questions if you don’t believe me,” countering the criticism that he had received.

Even users that weren’t fans of Tohoshinki commented that, “You have to consider how much influence your words have on others, and choose your words wisely.” “I think it’s immature to be arguing with fans in public,” “You’re giving a scary impression to all of us (Non-Tohoshinki fans) that trust your words.” And a debate about Matsuura’s behavior on twitter began.

The conversation got overheated, and Avex songstress Ayumi Hamasaki intervened. She wrote, “Please stop directing your anger and sadness onto Masa (Matsuura). He’s in a situation where he has to know things that he doesn’t want to know. He, who knows everything and has even cried because of it, just like everyone, bears deep scars but still continues to hope, so aren’t you comrades?” And her writing managed to put a stop to the intense situation.

In April, Matsuura too came under fire when he tweeted that “Last year, I happened to meet Changmin at the Record Awards, and tried to shake his hand but got ignored.” And that “There’s a rumour that Yunho and Changmin will transfer to Universal.” These tweets hinted at the inner turmoil of the disbandment issues, and fans criticized him for this.

Avex has been suffering from a decline in record sales. However, Tohoshinki’s BEST ALBUM, which sold a record number of 800,000 copies since February without support from the management shows without a doubt that they were top stars. Matsuura himself probably suffered a big shock from the news of the potential disbandment. From supporting the members’ solo activities to Changmin and Yunho’s transfer rumors, he has had much to deal with, and this could have been the cause of his outburst on twitter.

*T/N: Note that the amount stated in the article is WRONG. The current claim is for 1 billion won (73.3 million yen) per person, not 10 billion won.
