[News] 101212 The Battle Between ‘Tears of Heaven’ of Xiah Junsu and ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ of Jo Seung Woo… The Result?
Musical ‘Tears of Heaven’ that casts JYJ Xiah Junsu (Kim Junsu) is not able to avoid the battle against musical star Jo Seung Woo.
On December 10th, Kim Junsu’s representative through a phone call with SSTV said, “Kim Junsu will appear in “Tears of Heaven’”. ‘Tears of Heaven’ is produced by Seol Do-yoon as representative from Seol Company and Kim Kwang-soo, the representative from Core Content Media. The musical is prepared as a ‘Global Project’ that aims Asia and world wide market and will be performed on February 1st next year.
According to the schedule, Xiah Junsu’s current cast seems to unavoidably confront the musical ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ that is starring musical star Jo Seung Woo, since the latter is also planned to be performed until the end of March next year.
Through the first musical ‘Mozart’ performed January this year, Xiah Junsu won Rookie Award at ‘The Musical Award’ and became a de facto prove that he indeed has emerged as ‘the new star in musical industry’, therefore the result of his fight to grab audiences’ attention against South Korea’s undoubtedly most popular musical star Jo Seung Woo has been under a lot of people’s concern.
Meanwhile, ‘Tears of Heaven’ that describes about a man’s greatest green love that is crossing beyond the fate will hold their press conference on December 13th at a hotel in Gangnam, Seoul and is expected to officially announce its line up casts.

[News] Tohoshinki Trio Speaks openly About Their Complex Emotions And New Determination
In June, they held the concert “JUNSU/JEJUNG/YUCHUN THANKSGIVING LIVE IN DOME” at the two major Domes, and started breaking away from Tohoshinki. Junsu, Jejung and Yuchun have started their activities as a trio. At Tokyo Dome on 13 June, when they held their final concert, many reports spoke about how the trio cried while showing their love and thanks to the fans, showing their unwavering popularity.
Before embarking on the new stage, Junsu, Jejung and Yuchun went on their own journeys in search of themselves. Their honest words from their hard, and what they feel about the new stage, a real side of themselves are shown in the DVD “3hree Voices”, which was just released.
Junsu released his solo single “XIAH,” which did favorably, went to Australia for the first time. He thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful sea, admired the vast nature and was excited all the time, a total opposite from his normal calm self. “This is a time when I can look back on everything that happened since debut,” he said, talking about his current feelings.
After the recently ended drama “Sunao Ni Narenakute (Hard to say I love you)”(Fuji TV) and showing his acting skills in Japanese, Jejung headed to Canada. He enjoyed dog sledding, and drinking with the staff. Jejung, who has been working hard from Tohoshinki to the current solo activities, showed a fresh side as he went around.
And for Yuchun, he went back to his home country, Korea. He was born in Seoul, but grew up in America and went through a hard time. Returning to Korea alone to debut with Tohoshinki, and went through a turbulent route. He now revisits Korea “because this is the country I was born in,” he expresses. You can see his love and feelings for his home country, as well as determination for the new stage.
The three spent time in various places reflecting. Yuchun is shooting a drama in Korea, and other solo activities have started. As they show their honest appearance and words, we want to discover the passion they have been hiding in their heart.

[News] The Scary Ticket Power of TVXQ Junsu & Yunho
Stars debuting for a stage (T/N: in term of drama/musical stage) performance is currently receiving many attention. However the hot issue is not only the challenge those stars face for drama and musical stage itself, but also the huge ticket power of these stars to invite audiences to the theatre that has been recognized ever since.
TVXQ members U-Know Yunho and Xiah Junsu, for instance, have showed off an outstanding ticket power and gave proof of the popularity of themselves.
In December last year, Xiah Junsu took part in his first musical ‘Mozart’. At the 3rd round ‘Mozart’ ticket sales, all 4 stages consisting 12,000 seats where Junsu starring in were all sold out in only 3 hours. Meanwhile during the first and second ticket sales, fans flocked the reservation site that caused the site’s server to crash.
Xiah Junsu’s popularity seems to be repeated by U-Know Yunho. It’s still two months ahead before U-Know Yunho makes his appearance in musical ‘Goong’ on September 8th to 19th. However on last July 9th all tickets were already sold out in 2 minutes.
Moreover, fans who couldn’t get the tickets from Japan, China, Taiwan, and other Asia countries keep sending inquiries to the musical production company. ‘Goong’ production company thanked U-Know Yunho for the popularity of the musical stage and currently in process of discussion to add even more stages for him to perform.

[NEWS] 100701 Idols Take Over Musicals, for Better or Worse
‘If we can create pieces that are moving as well as original, we may be able to remove the idols from the stage.’
The first Korean production of the musical “Miss Saigon” was a hit when it premiered in 2006 with more than 85 percent of seats sold. Confident that the show could repeat its successful run, another Korean production of the musical was staged here earlier this year. This time, however, ticket sales were at only 55 percent.
“The Phantom of the Opera” was one of the best-selling musicals here until May, but sales are less than stellar these days.
Korean productions of hit musicals have drawn audiences and re-shaped the landscape of the theater scene in recent years. But the industry that has proven so lucrative for the industry as a whole is experiencing a shift toward a new phenomena that critics say could change things - for better or for worse. While theater critics say recent productions are higher in quality than in the past, sluggish ticket sales in recent months have led the industry to refer to its current situation as musical theater’s “ice age.”
In the midst of the public’s indifference, the only performances that have been able to attract audiences are the ones that have members of Korea’s idol groups as part of their casts.
The musical “Mozart,” which stars Xiah Jun-su, a member of the group TVXQ, recorded average ticket sales of 99 percent when he was in the role. That figure dropped to just 74 percent when another actor was in the leading role. Similarly, the Korean production of “Legally Blonde” had its own idol star in Girls’ Generation member Jessica. Ticket sales surged to 90 percent when Jessica, who rotated the role with two other actresses, was on the boards, but plummeted to just 70 percent when she was not.
The most recent example of this phenomenon is the production of “Midnight Sun,” which also featured a member of Girls’ Generation, Taeyeon. Sales soared to a whopping 98 percent when she was on stage but fell to 78 percent when someone else was in the role.
“The Korean public tends to be stingy when it comes to paying their own money for cultural events,” pop culture critic Sung Gi-wan said. “The only ones who are willing to do that are fans who want to watch their favorite stars.”
The current trend is not the result of bad acting or a dearth of good musicals, critics say. Instead, it appears to be the simple fact that casting popular singers attracts fans and publicity. “A Chorus Line,” which opened last weekend, has Jung-ah, a member of girl group After School, and Soo-hyun, a member of U-Kiss, in the cast. The producers revealed that they did not want to cast celebrities because of their busy schedules but investors refused to support the production if the stars were not part of it.
“The public is sick of the surge of large-scale musicals from overseas that have arrived since 2001,” theater critic Cho Yong-sin said. “Musicals in the U.S. were also reliant on Hollywood stars until well-crafted musicals were made. If we can create pieces that are moving as well as original, we may be able to remove the idols from the stage.”

[Trans] 100709 Kim HyungSuk is Satisfied With JYJ
Songwriter Kim HyungSuk expressed his satisfaction of working with JYJ (Xiah Junsu, Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun) on their American album.
Kim HyungSuk recently posted on his Cyworld mini homepage, “Currently in America working with Kanye West and Rodney Jerkins. The results look good.”
Kim HyungSuk has decided to participate as the project producer for the DBSK trio’s album, targetting the Asian market. With the help of Kim HyungSuk, the three members will be working with Kanye West and Rodney Jerkins, among many other US hip-hop artists.
JYJ’s advancement will be helped greatly by Rodney Jerkins, just as he has worked with Se7en entering the US market in the past.
It has become known that Kim HyungSuk has worked with Rodney Jerkins in the past. As Jerkins has much interest in capable Asian artists, along with his relationship with Kim, he decided to join this project. Kim HyungSuk is currently in LA, working with JYJ on their album.
Meanwhile, Kim HyungSuk has been informing fans of the shocking cultural differences while working with people from a foreign country.
Kim HyungSuk stated, “It feels like we’re heading for a utopia, as we don’t have a demo or any base. These people (Kanye West and others) think of themselves as artists, so all my hard work was like playing to them.” He continued, “These singers that don’t listen to a word I say get on stage and give a great performance, so it’s awkward trying to scold them. Any bad feelings seemed to have melted like snow, and I feel like I should toss them up and compliment them… I’m still a long way away.”
According to a spokesperson from JYJ’s side, they are currently working on the album, aiming for an August release. Overseas album sales will be handled by a well-known album distrubtor.
JYJ still has their debacle with SM Entertainment to handle this coming 25th.

XIAH Junsu ~ PARTY ALONE
There’s happiness too when it’s just you
Debuting as a member of Tohoshinki in 2004, being called a “prodigy” from his natural singing talent has gained a lot of popularity. This time as XIAH Junsu he will release his first Japanese solo single. And also, one of the songs is composed by Junsu himself! The song contains his thoughts and about his challenge of a musical at the start of the year, including also things about being solo and so on!!
—Please tell us about “Intoxication” and “Kanashimi no Yukue” in the single to be released. What kind of feelings did you want to express through the song?
Even though “Intoxication” is a piece that I self-composed, I had wanted to try to combine black music and RnB to make a dance song. This is my first solo single in Japan, so I used a music style that I liked a lot. I think it’s a simple yet sexy and stylish dance song. “Kanashimi no Yukue” is just as the title states, I used my own sadness to express the song. It’s like.. you know when guys have a time where they’re weak and show it right? It’s like I wanted to express that out straightforwardly…
—What are the differences between solo and group activities?
The most important thing about group activities is the balance. But with solo activities, with one person, you have to keep the attention, or otherwise it won’t work out. That’s why being powerful and dynamic is a must. The points where I have to place my power in is very different, and i’m still not too used to it.
「A habit that I don’t want others to know, is that I sleep fully nude!」
—This year you also challenged acting in a musical for the first time, was there any dis-coordination?
It was totally different! As I thought, you can’t sing with a pop feel. Talking about what’s different, it’s kind of hard to say it through words… (in truth if you perform, then you’ll feel that difference!) Thanks to the musical, I learnt a lot, and on top of that, it made me really happy to hear the passionate cheering of the fans. As I thought, i’m the happiest when i’m on the stage~
「If it was only me on an island, I do think I will sing」
—Lastly, please tell us what you want to do from now on!
Work, love, a thinking method…. I want to be a man who can excel in everything. Then, I would like to seal up my oyaji gags (laughs). If it’s a solo, then I want to compete with music!
When i’m by myself, i’ll be happy by doing these things!
Childhood times:
Because i’m always with my twin, Junho, we always play pranks on people. If there’s a girl we like, we would suddenly scare her so she would turn to look at us. Now that I think back about it, I wonder why I did those things, I regret it quite a bit (laughs).
Primary school times:
Basically it was all soccer! Recently I sometimes read back on the journals I wrote then, and 80% of it was about soccer. Sleeping, going to school, playing soccer; it was just these three things (forced smile).
High school times:
I began to be a trainee when I was 12, and I was already a high school student, thinking only of singing. After that naturally is dance practise. The me back then, worked really hard to be an artist.
After debut:
Because it was so busy, there was practically no me-time. But during the occasional break, sometimes I want to sleep, or watch a movie; these kind of things. If there’s suddenly a blank, I myself didn’t know what I should of done.
Recently:
Recently i’ve been busy composing. When making a dance song, I would just dance randomly to it too. Because i’m by myself, so I don’t have to worry about others seeing me (laughs). In the end, if you don’t listen the song and just dance to it, it just wouldn’t work.
